    About this simulation

    Birth　From 216 animals, the species, country and place, sex and number of siblings are chosen at random. The odds depend on "How the animal is chosen".

    A life　Lifespans, survival at each stage of growth, breeding, predators, seasonal life, migration and hibernation are simple models based on research and records for each animal. Every real individual's life is far more varied.

    Numbers　Population estimates and conservation status are approximate figures published by the IUCN Red List, national governments, the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) and research institutions. Sources can differ widely. Animals without an estimate (such as insects and amphibians) are left out of "By population size".

    Hard moments　Predation, disease, hunger, accidents, deaths caused by people, and the slaughter or culling of farm animals happen as they do in real life and husbandry, described without graphic detail. Your records and field guide are stored only in this browser.
